Mel Wilson understands horses. I've worked with so many trainers who don't care why a horse is misbehaving, and the result is they continue to misbehave. We try expensive shoeing, ulcer medicine, calming supplements, repeated vet checks, anything money can buy and nothing changes. My lovely quarter horse was acting out at what seemed like the dumbest things. Mel helped me kindly and quickly learn how to have him accept fly spray, how to stand at the mounting block without stomping off or bucking as soon as I got on, and how to allow me to work with him to get past his inherent wariness. We were able to lay a foundation that helped my horse and helped me. I will always have a lot to learn, and I want to learn it from Mel Wilson.
I met Mel many years ago when I needed help in restarting a horse after 3 months of stall rest. She developed a program, which kept the mare's mind active and her feet quiet. She has introduced many of my young horses to groundwork and trailer loading. She has a great eye and lots of training ideas to help maximize a horse's potential.
Mel can teach pretty much anything! Being around horses my whole life, I have had countless riding lessons with many trainers I admire. But, very few, if any, had spent the time to teach me true horsemanship. Mel has taught me tools to use that are practical and have taught me to read my horse better in order to adjust my expectations accordingly. I've learned a new level of patience and how to slow down to be the best version of myself for my horse. If my horse won't load, Mel has taught me tools to work through it. If my horse won't cross something on the trail, Mel has taught me a tool for that too. If my horse is having trouble with the farrier, Mel has taught me how to find the root of the problem and work on it. When I decided to try working equitation, she helped my horse and I get comfortable carrying the garrocha pole and gave us exercises to work on, so we were prepared for our first clinic. She is a trailer loading genius, groundwork guru, and wonderful horsewoman - an absolute gem in the horse world. If you can dream it, I am pretty sure she can teach it!
Mel has been such a help to me with my warmblood mare, Lily. She has helped me to be a better and more reliable leader for my horse. It has given both Lily and I confidence, and I look forward to working with her more.
Mel's knowledge, compassion and consistency have been instrumental in furthering my horsemanship. She readily shares her knowledge, helping to build a reliable equine. She readily shares her years of experience, helping to build confidence in the rider. Mel's focus on building a strong foundation in your equine will improve YOUR horsemanship. Improvements in YOUR horsemanship will improve your relationship with your horse or mule and make it a more reliable partner. All of this carries over to trail riding.I feel confident and safe in her arena. She's patient, but she pushes me too. Our lessons are fun and I always leave with a plan for the coming weeks. If you want to improve your horsemanship, if you've lost your confidence, if you want to build a reliable partner - get into a consistent lesson program with Mel Wilson. I can honestly say that without her guidance and support, I would not be riding right now.
